Nico Fresco Restoration: The murals can be destroyed, but the history of winning the championship cannot be erased
Carlos Lopez is the author of the huge mural of Bilbao's winning the 2024 Cup of Kings. Recently, he was interviewed by Marca.
"For me, the only meaning of this mural is to tell a story. This work is intended to pay tribute to the trophy that has been waiting for 40 years to win and the enthusiasm of the fans, and that's all."
Carlos Lopez regrets the damage suffered by the mural, especially after Nico Williams was involved in the controversial event. He made it clear that his work and the spirit it represented were superior to any act of vandalism.
"You can do whatever you want, but you can't erase it. This part of history you can't erase."
"The mural reflects many very touching moments that happened before and after that game and after the game. I tried to make these stories manifest in the mural."
Carlos Lopez talked about every character depicted on the wall: "Today I painted the 'Bison' Villalifrey, a benchmark, an amazing person, a man who became a legend in Bilbao for many reasons. Villalifrey's trumpet represents the festival, celebration. And captain Inaghi Williams, who represents the entire team, he held up the trophy and was behind the lion. , that is the spirit of the lion. And De Marcos is a symbol, he himself represents the jersey and the number behind it. "
Carlos Lopez specially gave Inaghi Williams a few words: "Inaghi is great. His status in Bilbao history, as the captain now, is amazing. He is a role model for other children to follow. When I saw a child of different blood in my neighborhood wearing a Bilbao jersey, I was moved. Without Inaghi, there would be nothing that happened later, and there wouldn't even be his younger brother Nico."
Carlos Lopez also told the heartwarming stories and care received during the restoration of the mural. Some children sent him ice water when he was working, some fans shared memories and stories when he painted, and even gave him ham and anchovies.
"Everyone has his own story, and that's what's great about Bilbao. We must always look for things that unite us, grow and become stronger."
Despite the act of vandalism, Carlos Lopez is determined to continue defending his work as a legacy of identity and pride dedicated to Bilbao.
