De Thomas: I don t regret not accepting Lopetegui s advice to stay in Real Madrid. I wanted to retire at Espanyol
This summer, De Thomas is renting out from Vallecano to Waukra Sports in Qatar, and he is preparing to start a new adventure in Qatar with head coach Vicente Moreno. The 30-year-old Spanish shooter was interviewed by the Ass, during which he talked about his feelings at his new owner. Moreno, who has coached teams such as Espanyol, Mallorca and Osasuna, is considered the one who best stimulates De Thomas' potential.
-How do you feel on a new team these days?
"I'm very happy. I'm eager to get myself back and feel what it's like to be a player again... This is something I've gradually lost over the past few years. It's a great opportunity to rekindle the passion, and hopefully it's a great year."
- Talk about Volkra
"I was surprised, I found the players here are very talented and the clubs have a good structure. It's exciting to choose to come to one of the best clubs in Qatar.
- How did Vicente Moreno convince you to join this adventure?
"Vicent is the coach I've ever met who cares about me the most and admires me the most, and our friendship makes it all easy. When he calls me and we talk, I know I just want to work with him."
--Under Vicente's guidance, you became the top scorer and was called by the national team
" We are all very competitive people without a doubt. When we first met him in Qatar, we smiled at each other because we had a very good understanding. We knew we could achieve great things together."
-He always defended you, refuting the statements that you were a rebellious or a problem player...
"I have been carrying this image all my life, and people don't know me . I am a little special, a little anti-social. It’s easy to criticize and spread rumors, but I know that those who know me like me. I am a good person and are helpful and supportive…”
—You posted a post when you bid farewell to Vallecano and said “goodbye and apologize”
“‘Goodbye’ is because I’m leaving the club to rent, ‘apology’ is because I feel I’m not doing well enough. A lot of external factors have affected me, but I could have done more. This apology is for those who trust me because I haven’t met their expectations and I admit that I have not performed well enough in the past few years. I can only ask for forgiveness and can’t say anything else.”
—Looking back, do you have any regrets? For example, did you not accept Lopetegui's invitation to stay in Real Madrid?
"I don't regret it because it makes me who I am now. If I accepted Lopetegui's proposal, I don't know where I would be, but I was ambitious and decided to leave. I went to Vallecano, Benfica, Espanyol... I won the top scorer, and entered the national team... All the decisions I made were correct, even if the results were not satisfactory."
- How did your family get through this period? What advice did they give you?
"My family is not easy. A reporter said that I pretended to be sick, which hit us a lot, which is a kind of disrespect. My family suggested that I think more about myself and learn to refuse."
- Which club has the greatest impact on you?
"Espanyol. I wanted to retire there, but Diego Martinez came to coach and he ruined my plan. That guy came to drive me away. I don't understand why he didn't want me, even though I won the scorer award, entered the national team, and was in the best time of my career. After he came, he drove me away. I was very happy and the fans liked me very much."
- Do you know why he didn't like you?
"He is a very cowardly coach. He hopes that his team will only have chess pieces and no personality. He hopes that everything will do as he says, so Diego Lopez, De Thomas, David Lopez... are all driven away."
