Associated Press: Starting from the 27/28 season, the defending Champions League champions will have a separate home opener
The Associated Press reported that the 2027-28 Champions League will seek business model innovation, with a total revenue target of over 5 billion euros starting in 2027.
UC3, a joint venture between UEFA and the European Football Club Group, announced that it has reached a six-year commercial copyright agreement with the American organization Relevent. It will reform its club competitions starting from the 2027-28 season, with the goal of increasing the total season revenue to more than 5 billion euros.
This reform plan contains many innovations. The most eye-catching thing is that starting from 2027, the defending Champions League champions will have a separate home opener on Tuesday night in the first game week of the season.
In addition, Relevent is actively seeking to cooperate with global streaming media platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV+ or Amazon Prime to package and sell a priority broadcasting rights for 17 games including the finals to adapt to new viewing trends. The deadline for relevant offers is November 18.
This move aims to push the current revenue level of at least 4.4 billion euros per season to a new high. For comparison, in the current season's bonus distribution, the Champions League teams share approximately 2.5 billion euros, while the total bonuses for the Europa League and the European Cup are 565 million euros and 285 million euros respectively.
